3/17/08- It is time to play catch up, since I have been MIA for the past 10 days. Right after the last photo update, I flew to the Lake Whitney amateur national to shoot photos of the Red Bull Jams team. From there, I flew back to CA for 12 hours, packed some fresh clothes and got on a plane to Minneapolis for SX. Now I am back home in NJ for ten days. It is great to finally have a short break.
Now, onto the stuff you all really care about, Minneapolis SX photos. Chad Reed's string of bad luck continued. The birthday boy, who was sick as a dog, got a bad start in the main, fought his way into second behind Josh Hill. It looked as if Reed was going to get a birthday victory, but went down at the end of the whoop section. He would have to settle for 7th, losing more valuable points to Kevin Windham. 450 class rookie, Josh Hill, made an early pass on Ryan Dungey for the lead and never looked back. Ryan Dungey put in an amazing ride to finish second, followed by Kevin Windham.
The Lites class show cased a battle that will be one for the ages. Josh Grant and Ryan Villopoto battled for 14.95 laps, before Villopoto made the final pass for the win. The final section of track featured an off-camber turn that sent the riders into a step on, step off jump. Villopoto had the inside line, and Grant was on the outside. Grant attempted to square off the corner to cut underneath Villopoto. In doing so, Villopoto nearly landed on his head, forcing Grant to lay the bike over in the air. Martin Davalos finished third, followed by series points leader, Trey Canard.

3/7/08- It is time to get excited people. Here is your first FMX update of March. Ok, so maybe it isn't that exciting, but there still are some pretty cool photos in the gallery. I combined photos from 2 different sessions to make it. Click the image on the right to view the photos.
Be sure to tune into Fox Sports Network tonight at 11pm PST for the Best Damn Sports Show. The crew stopped by the Mulisha compound on Wednesday and they will be featuring the bad boys of FMX on the show tonight. For photos of the behind the scenes action, check out Metal Mulisha.com.

3/3/08- This post is dedicated to Useless Airways. Photos would have been up yesterday, but this amazing airline allowed me to get the full experience of Indianapolis and Phoenix airport. Instead of getting home at 11am, like my itinerary said, I got home at 8pm. On a lighter note, Chad Reed was back on top of the podium. He got the main event hole shot and checked out. It looked as if Davi Millsaps had second place in the bag, but a crash in a rhythm section late in the race, left him on the ground. SX class rookie, Josh Hill, put in the best ride of his young career to finish second. Andrew Short rounded out the podium.
Trey Canard was given a gift, when Ryan Villopoto went down while trying to pass him for the win. The two came into the final turn side by side. Villopoto was too far inside and clipped a tuff block. This sent him in a nose wheelie up and over the berm. Canard has now won his first two ever SX Lites races. Villopoto remounted and charged from eighth place, passing Nico Izzi with two turns left, to finish second. Izzi made his first podium appearance, finishing third. 2/28/08- Today Potter, Lusk, Bamburg, Twitch, Taka, and racer Derek Mahoney went to Fitzpatrick's house to hit the ramp. Everyone is starting to finally be able to reach deeper in their bag of tricks, since the rain has stopped. Click the image on the right to view the photos. Now I need to get my things together for the Indy SX this weekend. Check back ater this weekend for photos.

2/25/08- On Saturday, Potter, Fitzpatrick, Fluffer, and Ebanol put on a FMX demo for the fans of Nascar at the California Speedway. The weather was looking great until the last jump session. The pretty blue skies made way for dark storm clouds. The guys got their last jumps in before the rain hit. This was a major disappointment because it canceled Sunday's demo and the Sprint and Busch Cup races. Click the image on the right to view the photos.

2/22/08- All the rain here lately has made hitting ramps impossible. When the guys can't ride FMX, they fire up the 4-strokes and head to the hills for some trail/freeriding. The Mulisha, Jason Lawrence, and friends hit the trails for some fun.It was a nice change of pace from the usual tricks and flips I am always taking photos of. Click the image on the right to view what went down.

2/20/08- The other day a world class group of riders including Twitch, Sato, Potter, Rebeaud, Lusk, and Pages, gathered at Jimmy Fitzpatrick's for a practice session. There were so many riders waiting to hit the jump that it looked like a line at an amusement park to ride a rollercoaster. Instead of waiting in line, the guys could hit the new 120 foot valley jump. The pictures don't do it justice. Stay tuned for photos from a trail ride through Temecula with the Mulisha and Jason Lawrence. Click the image on the right to view the photos.

2/18/08- Houston, TX was a night of new winners for 2008. Kevin Windham designed the track and it wasn't that much of a shock when he posted the fastest lap times in practice. In the main event, Davi Millsaps got the hole shot and led early before going down in a corner. Windham took over the lead and never looked back. This was his first win since Anaheim 1, 2005. Chad Reed suffered a mid pack start, and couldn't;t come through the pack fast enough to catch Windham. He would settle for second, followed by Tim Ferry.
In the Lites class, Ryan Dungey got the hole shot, which Lawrence three positions back. Dungey's streak of miscues continued when he went down in the whoops early on in the race. Austin Stroupe and Jason Lawrence exchanged the lead a couple of times, with the victory going to Stroupe. Lawrence finished second, picking up 4 valuable points on Dungey. Lawrence has a 6 point lead over Dungey going into the final round in Seattle. Click the image on the right to view the photos.

2/10/08- Jason Lawrence and Chad Reed both kept the ball rolling this weekend in San Diego, winning their respected class. Ryan Dungey had another weekend he would like to forget about. His 6th place finish allowed Lawrence to take over the West Lites points lead. Reed had to work for the win this weekend. First having to pass Millsaps, then later battle him again after falling in a sand corner. Reed has extended his points lead to 45 points over Kevin Windham. 1/27/08- I hate to break it to you all, but i skipped last night's San Fran mudfest of a SX. After watching it on TV this morning, I wasn't too upset about missing the race. Haha. Congratulations to Jason Lawrence for nailing down his first career SX victory. I am pretty sure this is going to be the first of many, now that he has the monkey off his back. Reed looked good in the mud despite a mediocre start. Smooth riding and mistakes from the riders in front of him allowed him to capture his third win in four races.
You can also check out Ryan Leyba's MotoX blog on EXPN.com. Leyba was nice enough to include me in his latest update, talking about new sponsorships for 08. Look out, you might see me on the gate for A1 2009! Check out his blog here http://expn.go.com/expn/story?id=3159777.
Not a whole lot has been going on out here in socal. It has been raining almost everyday here, making it impossible for the guys to practice FMX. However, it has left us with some great conditions for motocross. Twitch, Taka, Garland, and I have been taking full advantage of the wet conditions. Maybe one of these days Leyba will come out and snap some photos of us turning some laps...hint hint Leyba!

1/23/08- Yesterday Garland and I bought ourselves some 450's. Garland picked up a CRF450 and my homie, and quite possibly the best team manager ever, Chris McAvoy of YoT, set me up with a YZ450F. We went motoing with Twitch, Taka, and Ailo Gaup on our top secret outdoor track. It is a lot of fun being back on the bike again after 4 years of being off. I sure need to work on cornering with the tractor they call a 450. Thanks to Leyba for the shots. Click for a larger view.

1/20/08- GO GIANTS! BRING ON THE PATS!
Last night was 1986 throw back night in Anaheim. All the greats were on hand to meet with fans and sign autographs. The most inspiring moment of the night was seeing 1986 Anaheim SX winner, David Bailey, ride out onto the track for his introduction. To top it all off, Carmichael, McGrath, and Reed did a parade lap full of whips and Nacnacs.
Despite all the high notes of the night, James Stewart made a tough announcement to the crowd that he would not be racing due to lingering knee injury. Stewart re injured his the same knee that prevented him from finishing the Outdoor Nationals series, while preparing for the SX season. With Stewart gone, Reed was able to cruise to his second win of the season. Premier class rookie, Josh Hill, landed his first podium in 3 races, finishing second. Rounding out the podium was Kevin Windham, who now sits second in the points.
Jason Lawrence was the third fastest rider out of both classes. Unfortunately, he was unable to take advantage of his speed in the main event due to bike complications. Rookie, Austin Stroupe, led early, but was passed by Ryan Dungey. Broc Hepler was in tow, also making the pass on Stroupe. Click the image on the right to view the photos.

1/18/08- Despite being sick, I went with Garland to Deegan's house this morning. It has been awhile since i have been out there. 1/13/08- Normally I would do a little write up on last night's race, but the Giants just beat the Cowgirls and I am too excited to write anything. Good thing the fans didin't bring a lot of popcorn for TO. HAHA! Enjoy the photos from Phoenix SX by clicking the images on the right.

1/11/08- I went back to Fitzpatrick's house this morning with Derek "Pretend to get ready to go out, but really go to sleep" Garland. I had to shoot some photos with Robbie Maddison for a magazine. You will notice photos of a crash involving Maddo. He went for an Underflip and his steering stabilizer locked up. He was unable to straighten his bars, sending him sideways into the ground. Maddo walked away with just a nasty scrape. Time to get ready for Phoenix SX. Click the image on the right to view the photos.

1/10/08- Riding in Temecula was back in full force today. The week of rain did a lot of good for Fitzpatrick's free ride playground, leaving us with moist dirt, and patches of green grass. The Mulisha boys, Nate Adams, and special guest, Josh Grant, came out to do work. You may notice some of the guys riding 4 strokes. Don't worry, everyone is staying on a 2 stroke (for now) for FMX, but while riding in the hills, the 4 stroke is a lot more fun according to Twitch. No one hit the ramps today, just the many perfectly sculpted dirt jumps. Josh Grant was throwing some of the biggest whips I have ever seen. Enough talking, click the image on the right to view the photos.
__________________________________________
1/9/08- Lots of rain makes for some great free riding out in the desert. Opportunities like this come along only a couple times a year, so we all packed up Twitch's motor home and headed out to Ocotillo. Derek Garland got the hero of the trip award for being the first to hit a new line on a huge step up and over jump the heck out of it. Twitch, Lusk, Bakken, and racer Mike Lapaglia were going off on it, throwing huge whips.
We adventured further out into the vast landscape, covering as much ground as we could to find jumps. Taka got his first taste of natural terrine riding, going long on a table top jump. The end result was a tweaked back. It was a successful trip and everyone had a lot of fun being able to get away from the ramps and go back to where FMX started. Click the image on the right to view all the action.

1/6/08- It usually never rains in Southern California, except when Anaheim Supercross is in town. Some of you may remember the 05 mud bash. The rain came down, but luckily, stopped early in the morning. Mid day practice/qualifying was postponed till 5pm and cut down to one session per class. The track was slick and muddy, despite being covered all day.
Reed and Stewart both won their heats, setting the stage for a great main event. The two entered the first turn in the front of the pack, but only Reed would emerge, with Stewart down on the ground. Stewart was able to cut through the pack and move into second, but Reed had checked out. Ferry finished third.
The Lites main event started off with a six way battle for the lead. New comer, Dan Reardon, led early un till Lawrence and Dungey got by. The two swapped the lead, and as Lawrence was about to make a move, he lost the front end. Dungey would cruise to the win, followed by Lawrence, and Justin Brayton. 1/2/08- Happy New Year everyone! I can't believe another season has gone by. I remember writing my first update from CA 2 years ago. Anyway, Robbie Maddison's jump was a great success. He was unable to go the distance he wanted to because of a bad head wind. The previous night in practice, Robbie was able to go 350. It was an amazing sight to witness. I was there shooting for Red Bull, so I can't post up a gallery like I normally would. I will see if I can throw up a few teasers, or you can go to www.redbull-photofiles.com to see what the staff and I came up with.
T minus 4 days till Supercross. The preseason buzz hasn't been running wild like usual. Not much talk about rivalries and who might be the spoiler. Does the entire motocross community all seem to agree that Stewart and Villopoto are both going to clean house in 08? We will see soon enough.
